The Kansas City Royals clinched a playoff spot Friday night for the first time in 29 years, beating the Chicago White Sox 3-1 behind seven scoreless innings from Jeremy Guthrie, according to an ESPN.com report.

Tigers Clinch Playoff Spot With Seattle Loss

The Detroit Tigers clinched a playoff spot with a loss by the Seattle Mariners on Wednesday.

Justin Verlander helped the Tigers along, allowing a single run in Detroit's 6-1 win over the Chicago White Sox.

The worst the Tigers can do now is one of the American League Wild Card spots. They are looking to win their fourth-straight division title and hold a two-game lead over the Kansas City Royals.

Kershaw Pitches Dodgers To NL West Title

The Los Angeles Dodgers beat the San Francisco Giants on Wednesday night to clinch the National League West title.

They rode Clayton Kershaw, who tied a career-high with his 21st win, to victory.

"You can't take lightly what we did," Kershaw said. "You got to celebrate accomplishments and that's what we did. It's really fun to celebrate with these guys."

It is the second-straight division title for the Dodgers.

Kershaw allowed one run and eight hits in eight innings, struck out 11 and walked none in his last start of the regular season, having won his final seven starts. He is trying to become the first player to lead the major leagues in ERA (1.77) in four consecutive seasons.

Cardinals Clinch Playoff Berth Despite Loss

The St. Louis Cardinals clinched a playoff spot on Sunday and then lost to the Cincinnati Reds.

St. Louis is still trying to clinch the National League Central title despite a roster of sick players. A flu bug has spread throughout the clubhouse.

Mike Matheny said there are "north of 10 players" bothered by flu-like symptoms.

"There are a lot of guys that are unavailable," he added. "Almost as many unavailable as available."

St. Louis secured its fourth consecutive postseason appearance when Milwaukee lost to Pittsburgh earlier in the day.

Angels Shutout M's, Claim AL West

The Angels clinched the AL West title Wednesday night, getting seven dominant innings of one-hit ball from C.J. Wilson in a 5-0 win over the Mariners, according to an ESPN.com report.

C.J. Cron hit a three-run homer for the major league-leading Angels (95-57), who wrapped up their first division crown since 2009 when the A's lost to the Rangers about an hour after Los Angeles' game ended.

The Angels had already secured a playoff spot Monday. They have won 12 of 14.

Orioles Win First AL East Title Since 1997

The Baltimore Orioles defeated the Toronto Blue Jays on Tuesday night to clinch their first American League East title since 1997.

"The guys are having a great time, and they earned it," Dan Duquette said. "We've got some more work to do, and these guys know it, but congratulations to them on the division crown. They did a great job."

With their ninth win in 10 games, the Orioles clinched their second playoff appearance in three years following a run of 14 consecutive losing seasons.

Nationals Clinch NL East Title

The Washington Nationals defeated the Atlanta Braves 3-0 on Tuesday night to clinch their second National League East title in three years.

Tanner Roark pitched five-hit ball over seven innings and Ian Desmond's two-run homer broke a scoreless tie in the sixth, sending Washington back to the playoffs with two weeks to go in the regular season.

"Nice to have it done," said Adam LaRoche, "The sooner, the better."

Angels Are First To Clinch Playoff Berth

The Los Angeles Angels clinched their first trip to the postseason since 2009 with a defeat of the Seattle Mariners on Monday night.

The Angels are the first Major League team to earn a berth this season.

"Guys are aware that this is one little milestone that we need, and I think they're proud of that," Mike Scioscia said. "But we have a long way to go. I think these guys know the bigger prize that we need to keep our eyes on."

Los Angeles leads the Oakland Athletics by 10.5 games for the American League West title.
